What Are the Four Core Values of CanCare?

A cancer diagnosis can feel like a sudden, life-changing event, leaving you overwhelmed by uncertainty. Please know, you’re not alone on this journey.

Founded in 1990 by cancer survivor Anne Shaw Turnage in Houston, CanCare has been a steadfast companion to cancer survivor volunteers, caregivers, and individuals facing cancer

Our mission is simple: to replace fear with hope by providing personalized and confidential support. Whether you simply need an ear to listen or want to hear from those who’ve been down a similar path, we are here to walk alongside you.

At the heart of CanCare is our incredible network of survivors and caregivers. Embodying our core values, their courage, compassion, and commitment inspire us every day. We believe in the power of connection and offer a safe space where you can find strength and resilience.

1. Courage: Bringing Hope Through Survivorship

It takes incredible courage from everybody involved to face a cancer diagnosis head-on. Our cancer survivor volunteers understand this experience intimately. They've walked the path, experienced the challenges, and emerged stronger on the other side.

Volunteering to share their stories is a powerful way for our survivors to give back. By openly discussing their cancer experience, they offer hope and inspiration to others facing a similar situation. And for those currently facing a diagnosis, seeing someone who has overcome cancer can ignite a spark of courage within you.

At CanCare, we've had the privilege to witness the power of courage firsthand. With over 40,000 individuals receiving personalized support, we've seen countless stories of hope and transformation.

2. Compassion: No One Walks Alone

A cancer diagnosis is unchartered territory for everyone involved and we believe no one should navigate it alone

Thanks to the compassion of our volunteers, we succeed in upholding that belief for those who need it most. They offer a listening ear, a comforting presence, and a deep understanding of what you’re going through.

While the love and support of friends and family members mean the world, there’s something truly special about connecting with someone who’s been through it. Our cancer survivors offer hope and a sense of companionship that can make all the difference.

3. Commitment: Creating a Sacred Trust

We believe in building a strong, trusting bond with every person we serve. Your privacy is incredibly important to us. We're committed to creating a safe, supportive environment for anyone affected by cancer.

Our volunteers are dedicated to providing reliable emotional support for cancer caregivers, cancer patients, and other survivors. They understand that trust is built on confidentiality, and they treat every interaction with the utmost care.

Whether you're a patient, caregiver, or survivor, your personal information is protected. This open, honest communication helps us create genuine connections.

With over 2,300 volunteers trained in supporting more than 60 types of cancer, our team is committed to providing diverse and confidential support every step of the way.

4. Connection: Building a Cancer Support Community

We believe in the power of connection. That's why we're dedicated to building a supportive community where everyone feels like they have a place where they belong.

Whether you're a patient, caregiver, or survivor, you deserve to have a cancer support community where you can connect to others. That's why we strive to create friendly environments that ensure everyone has access to the resources they need.

This dedication to connection makes a real difference. With over 215,000 hospital visits to patients and caregivers at our partner facilities, we're proud to be making a positive impact on countless lives.
