In September 2021, two weeks after her mastectomy, Cynthia received the news she had prayed for, her cancer had not spread, and she was declared cancer-free.

Her cancer journey there was not easy. Chemo left her sick, weak, and struggling with painful side effects. As a single mom, she often pushed through alone but learned to give herself grace on the days she couldn’t. Financial strain added to the weight, yet support from organizations lightened her burden.

At first, cancer felt like a curse. But through faith, support from her sister, and other women, Cynthia found peace in surrendering control to God. In that surrender, she discovered strength, courage, and what she calls “cancer eyes”. A new perspective on life where colors are brighter, birds sound sweeter, and each moment feels more alive.

Today, Cynthia encourages others to seek community and support. For her, what once felt like a curse has led to some of life’s greatest blessings. As CanCare Volunteer and Ambassador she is able walk beside others.

To anyone thinking about seeking support from CanCare or Volunteering... I can tell you it's rewarding for both the survivors you'll connect with and for yourself. Knowing that you're not alone means so much, and I believe that feeling is reciprocal. Giving is so much sweeter than receiving. There's so much to learn from people, and no one should ever have to fight cancer alone.

My words to pass along to anyone facing cancer... Give yourself grace. You don’t have to be superwoman; courage is even better. Surrender your control and ask for help. It’s a gift you never knew you needed.
