Lauren L.
Lauren first heard about CanCare from a nurse in the hospital where she had surgery to have a port installed. The nurse gave her a brochure, which she tucked away in case she should need it in the future. At the time she went through treatments, she had a good base of friends and church family who were a big help. It wasn't until a few years after her treatment that she contacted CanCare to become a volunteer.
As a CanCare volunteer, Lauren not only takes on clients but also calls recent volunteers who have been matched to see how connections are going. She's very active in the CanCare community. Going through cancer really strengthened her faith in God—so many people were praying for her, and she felt loved and cared for. She spent a lot of time in God's word and came to understand how the joy of the Lord was her strength, particularly finding encouragement in the Psalms.
When asked about how CanCare impacted her life... I wish that people could know how friendly and helpful the CanCare organization is. The staff and volunteers are genuinely interested in helping others. It is a blessing to offer encouragement to cancer patients and survivors. It is so satisfying to talk with a CanCare client and hear them say "you are such an encouragement to me."
My words to pass along to anyone facing cancer... God's love for you is real, and He will use people to be His hands and feet in your life. You will find strength in unexpected places, and joy can still be found even in the darkest battle. Don't be afraid to reach out for support—there are people who genuinely want to help and encourage you through this journey.
